نفاس
Nifas
Pronounced: ni-FAAS
Nifas is postpartum bleeding, the blood that comes after childbirth. Like hayd, nifas carries its own set of worship rulings: a woman in nifas does not pray or fast until the bleeding stops and she performs ghusl. Nifas has a maximum duration that varies by madhab but no universally agreed minimum, meaning even a small amount of bleeding after delivery counts.
Why it matters for your worship
After giving birth, a woman is dealing with recovery, a newborn, and sleep deprivation. The last thing she needs is confusion about whether she should be praying or not. Knowing the nifas rulings for her madhab gives her clarity: she knows when her nifas period can end, when to perform ghusl, and when to start making up missed fasts. For women who gave birth during Ramadan, understanding nifas is directly tied to their qada obligations.
How the four madhabs differ
| Madhab | Ruling |
|---|---|
| Hanafi | Maximum nifas is 40 days. If bleeding stops before 40 days, she performs ghusl and resumes prayer. |
| Shafi'i | Maximum nifas is 60 days. Most common duration is 40 days. Bleeding beyond 60 days is istihadha. |
| Maliki | Maximum nifas is 60 days. Some Maliki scholars say 70 days. Bleeding that exceeds the maximum is istihadha. |
| Hanbali | Maximum nifas is 40 days. If bleeding continues past 40 days, it becomes istihadha and she resumes praying. |
Common questions
What is the difference between nifas and hayd?
Both nifas and hayd exempt a woman from prayer and fasting, and both require ghusl when they end. The difference is the cause: hayd is monthly menstrual bleeding, while nifas is bleeding that results from childbirth. They have different maximum durations and occur at different life moments, but the worship rulings during each are largely the same.
Do I need to make up fasts missed during nifas?
Yes. Fasts missed during nifas are treated the same as fasts missed during hayd. You are required to make them up (qada) after Ramadan. If nifas extended through a large portion of Ramadan, you may have many days of qada to schedule, and Sila helps you track and plan those make-up fasts.
What if my bleeding stops and starts again during nifas?
If your bleeding stops during the nifas window and then returns, the ruling depends on your madhab. Some scholars treat the clean days in between as part of nifas (so you remain in nifas), while others say the first stoppage marks the end of nifas if you see the signs of purity. This is one of the areas where consulting a scholar or using a madhab-aware tool is especially helpful.
